Cancel Microsoft 365 UK: Family Plans, App Stores and OneDrive Storage
Turning off Microsoft 365 renewal can affect more than the Office applications. If you use extra OneDrive space, share Family benefits or depend on a paid Outlook storage allowance, check the consequences before the plan reaches its end date. The account that bought the subscription is also the account that normally controls the billing.
The return route and timing
Microsoft 365’s official UK guidance is the source for the following published process. Microsoft's current cancellation guidance directs eligible account holders to the Microsoft account subscription controls. If the plan was purchased through Apple, Google Play or a separate retailer, Microsoft says to manage it with that seller instead. Use the Microsoft account that actually holds the billing record; signing in with a work or school address when you bought a personal plan through another account can leave you looking at the wrong subscription list.
Check the product and the seller
Microsoft explains that when paid benefits expire, desktop-app editing and OneDrive capacity can change. A customer who exceeds the free storage allowance may experience restricted file syncing and other limitations. If you share a Family plan, check which relatives use those benefits and whether they need to move or back up documents before the subscription ends. Cancellation by itself is not the same step as erasing the account or deleting files.
Avoid an unnecessary second journey
Open the Services & subscriptions page under the Microsoft account shown on the receipt. If the account says recurring billing is off or displays an expiry date, check what that means for the plan rather than pressing Cancel a second time in a different account. If you share subscriptions or use more OneDrive storage than the free allowance, plan for that practical impact before the paid period ends. Keep important documents accessible without relying on an account that may later enter a restricted state.
A common purchase scenario
You have a Family plan shared with several people, but only one person pays the renewal. The plan manager should review the billing settings, while each member checks any OneDrive storage above the free allowance. Changing the payer's subscription can have an effect on several accounts even though only one card is charged.
Where to check your order
Use Microsoft's official cancellation and subscription-expiry pages for the plan type shown in your account. Keep any cancellation confirmation and note the date the account says access changes. If an app store or external retailer collected the payment, contact that billing channel about earlier charges rather than assuming Microsoft directly holds the transaction. For the exact channel rules, check the official procedure or policy detail linked by the provider.
Storage beyond the subscription
Review OneDrive quota separately from the licence for Word and Excel. Microsoft's expiry guidance describes read-only or restricted operations when storage remains above the free allowance. The steps to preserve access may include downloading files or changing the storage plan, but a purchase decision depends on your own usage. The cancellation guide itself does not assess which option is financially preferable.
