ScottishPower Credit Refunds: Meter Reads, Direct Debits and Final Bills

A positive balance on a ScottishPower account does not always mean the full figure shown can be paid out immediately. The supplier checks whether the account has been billed recently, whether it has suitable meter readings and whether any very recent Direct Debit payment still needs to clear before confirming an online credit refund.

When an active account may qualify

ScottishPower’s refund guidance says the account should have been billed within the previous 28 days and should be based on actual meter readings. If the account is in credit and those conditions are met, an eligible customer can request a refund through the supplier’s refund tool, app or support channels.

A Direct Debit taken in the previous five working days is treated differently. ScottishPower says that amount is excluded from the refund calculation while the payment is still recent. This can explain why the amount available to request is lower than the headline credit visible on the account.

A refund can change the monthly payment review

Taking money out of an energy account changes the balance available for future charges. ScottishPower notes that a credit-refund request can therefore lead to a review of the monthly Direct Debit. Check the proposed payment amount afterwards rather than assuming the old monthly figure will remain unchanged.

Final bills have their own refund route

If you have left ScottishPower and the final bill shows a credit, the supplier says it will normally send the money automatically. Customers who paid by Direct Debit and still have usable bank details can receive the credit by BACS, with ScottishPower stating a target of five working days. Where a bank transfer is not available, a cheque route can take longer, with the supplier indicating up to ten working days.

Before requesting money from an active account, submit any current meter readings requested and make sure the latest bill has been produced. If the balance looks wrong, resolve that first rather than using a refund request to correct estimated usage.
