Foyles A Year of Books Cancellation: 14 Days and 12-Month Term
Foyles’ A Year of Books is sold as a 12-month subscription rather than a rolling monthly membership. Payment is taken upfront, and the retailer says the minimum term is twelve months. That makes the initial cancellation window particularly important if the recipient decides the subscription is not suitable.
The cooling-off period starts after the first book arrives
Foyles publishes a 14-day cooling-off period after receipt of the first book. A customer who wants to cancel in that period should notify the A Year of Books team and return the first book in mint condition. The recipient is responsible for the cost of sending that book back.
Once notice has been given and the first book has been received back as required, Foyles says a full refund is made to the original cardholder. Outside that initial cooling-off period, the FAQ says there is no refund for ending the subscription early.
It is not a monthly cancel-any-time service
The subscription sends one selected title each month, but that delivery rhythm does not turn the purchase into twelve separate monthly contracts. The published minimum term is a full year. Someone buying it as a gift should therefore explain the activation and cancellation conditions to the recipient rather than assuming they can stop after a few books and recover the unused balance.
What if the recipient already owns a book?
Foyles provides a separate exchange mechanism for duplicate or unsuitable monthly books. The FAQ says a recipient can make up to three exchanges during the year when the book is in perfect unread condition. Return postage and the cost of sending a replacement are borne by the recipient. That exchange route is different from cancelling the entire subscription.
Example
A subscriber receives the first monthly title on a Friday and decides the concept is not right for them. They should contact the subscription team within 14 days of receiving that first book and return it in mint condition. By contrast, deciding after several months that there are too many unread books does not create the same refund entitlement under the published subscription terms.
Keep the purchase details
The recipient may need the purchaser’s online order reference or store receipt information when activating the subscription. Keep those details, the first delivery date and any cancellation email together. The current rules are set out in the official Foyles A Year of Books FAQ.
