Steam UK Refunds: Game Playtime, Purchase Dates and Digital Items
Quick answer: Steam’s normal refund offer for games and software bought from its store covers requests made within 14 days of purchase when the title has been played for less than two hours. Valve says it may still review requests outside those conditions, but submitting a request is not the same as receiving approval. Start through the official Steam help site.
Check the game you bought, not just the date on your bank statement
The Steam refund rules separate ordinary games from downloadable content, in-game purchases, pre-orders, gifts and bundles. For a standard game, identify the date Steam records for the purchase and the playtime shown in your library. The two-hour measure is playtime, not the amount of time you spent downloading the game or reading its store page.
For downloadable content, Steam lists an ordinary 14-day period and restrictions related to usage of the underlying game and whether the content was consumed or altered. Some third-party DLC cannot be refunded, and the store page may mark the exclusion. In-game purchases are handled differently again: the policy describes specific conditions for Valve-developed titles and notes that other developers may opt in to certain refunds. Check the category of your purchase before comparing it with a friend’s refund for a different product.
Where to put a request
Sign into Steam Help, select the purchase and follow the refund or purchase-problem options available for that transaction. State the issue accurately, whether the game does not work on your machine or you purchased the wrong edition. Keep the request acknowledgement. Steam explains that approved refunds may be returned to the original payment method or to Steam Wallet, depending on the payment method and what it supports.
Example: You bought a bundle and have only played one of its titles. Do not assume the playtime for that title alone determines the whole bundle’s eligibility: Steam’s bundle rules consider combined use and whether any components have been transferred or are non-refundable.
Third-party keys and gifts require a different check
Steam states that it cannot refund purchases made outside its store, such as game keys purchased from another retailer. Go back to the merchant shown on the receipt for the relevant purchase policy. An unredeemed gift and a redeemed gift also follow different request steps; the recipient may have to initiate the request in the latter case. This guide describes Valve’s published service policy rather than assessing a personal legal claim about defective digital content.
If you see a refund option for one game but not another, check whether both purchases were actually completed through Steam. A bank transaction that mentions a game publisher or third-party shop may not be a Steam Store sale. For a game that will not launch, keep the error message and describe the technical problem when submitting the support request. You do not need to invent a different reason just because the game has recorded some playtime.
