RAC Breakdown Cancellation: Refunds, Renewal and Direct Debits
RAC distinguishes cancelling breakdown membership from simply stopping the payment instruction. Its current member guidance says an existing breakdown membership can be cancelled at any time, with the quickest route being to contact the cancellation team. The company also makes clear that cancelling a Direct Debit on its own does not cancel the policy.
Call RAC if you want the cover to end
For cover bought directly from RAC, the provider says calling its membership team is the easiest way to cancel and can help any refund due to be arranged sooner. Customers who cannot use the phone are directed to other contact options. The amount, if any, that is refundable depends on the applicable membership and its terms, so do not assume every mid-term cancellation produces the same credit.
Turning off renewal is different from cancelling now
If you have an annual continuous policy and simply do not want it to renew, RAC allows the automatic-renewal preference to be changed in myRAC. Turning off renewal does not terminate the current cover immediately; the membership continues until its existing expiry date.
This distinction matters if you are close to renewal. A customer who only wants to stop the next year’s charge may not need to end today’s breakdown cover, while somebody leaving immediately should use the cancellation process.
Cover provided through another company
Not every RAC-branded membership was sold directly by RAC. The provider states that cover supplied through an insurer, bank account, car dealership or vehicle manufacturer should be cancelled through that organisation. Contacting RAC as though it were the direct seller can delay the request.
Keep evidence of the cancellation
After speaking to the provider, retain any confirmation of the end date and refund information. Continue to check the payment account until the final amount is settled instead of cancelling the Direct Debit first and assuming the contract has disappeared.
RAC’s official breakdown membership FAQ contains the current cancellation and renewal instructions for direct members.
