EDF Energy Refunds: Credit Balances, Final Bills and Direct Debit

EDF can return account credit in several situations, but the steps depend on whether the energy account stays open. A customer who remains with EDF may need to request money back and provide an up-to-date meter reading. A customer moving home or switching supplier normally waits for the final bill.

Staying with EDF and asking for credit back

EDF explains that account credit can be used to reduce later monthly bills. If you still want a refund, contact the supplier. It may request a meter reading so the balance reflects recent energy use before money is released. This is important because the online balance can show payments that have arrived before all consumption has been billed.

Moving home

Tell EDF that you are moving and provide the final readings required for the account type. For Direct Debit customers, the supplier says credit shown after the final bill is automatically refunded. Its guidance specifically advises not cancelling the Direct Debit prematurely, because the existing bank instruction is used to return the money and is then cancelled after the refund has been processed.

Prepayment and smart Pay As You Go customers have separate closing steps. EDF’s help pages explain how remaining meter credit is transferred or refunded according to the meter and account setup, so a customer should use the instructions for their own account rather than copying the Direct Debit process.

Switching to another energy company

Once a switch completes, EDF prepares a final bill using the closing information. If the account is in credit, the supplier says the refund is sent after that final bill. Do not treat the switch date itself as the refund date; there is an account-closing stage first.

Example

If your Direct Debit account shows £120 credit before you move, send the final meter reading and wait for the final bill. Some of that apparent credit may be used against energy consumed since the previous bill. The remaining amount, if any, is the figure relevant to the automatic refund.

Keep the Direct Debit open until EDF finishes

Closing the payment instruction too early can complicate a straightforward bank refund. Review the official EDF Direct Debit and refund guidance together with its moving-home refund page for the current process.
