East Midlands Railway Refunds: Day-Before Rule, Advance Tickets and Disruption

East Midlands Railway’s refund rules now depend heavily on when the ticket becomes valid. For many Anytime, Off-Peak, Super Off-Peak, Day Travelcard and similar flexible products bought under the rules applying from 1 April 2026, a voluntary unused-ticket refund must be requested by 23:59 on the day before the ticket becomes valid.

Changing your mind is not the same as disruption

If you simply decide not to travel, check the ticket type before the valid date arrives. EMR’s published guidance makes the new deadline much earlier than the older 28-day-after-expiry rule that applied to many tickets bought before the change. Leaving the request until after the travel date can mean an otherwise flexible ticket no longer qualifies for an ordinary refund.

Advance tickets have their own conditions

Advance fares are normally tied to a particular booked train and are not treated like an Anytime or Off-Peak ticket for a change of mind. If the booked service is cancelled or disruption prevents the planned journey, the refund position can be different. Explain that the railway caused the journey to be abandoned rather than choosing a generic voluntary-cancellation reason.

Apply to the business that sold the ticket

EMR says unused tickets should be returned to the original point of sale. Website and app customers can often use the account or app refund tools. If a paper ticket has already been printed or collected, the physical ticket may have to be returned with the request. A ticket bought through another train company or retailer should normally be refunded by that seller.

Delay Repay is not the same claim

A ticket refund is for an unused journey or a journey abandoned because of disruption. Delay Repay is compensation for a journey that was actually made but arrived late. If a train is cancelled or delayed part-way through a journey and you return to the starting station instead, EMR says the unused journey can be refunded.
