Downgrading iCloud+ is not the same as deleting the files already stored in iCloud. Apple lets you select a smaller plan or cancel a paid plan, but the space available for new syncing and backups will change when the downgrade takes effect.
Find the plan in the right settings menu
On current iPhone software, Apple directs you to Settings, your name, Subscriptions and then iCloud+; you can choose Cancel Subscription or see other plans. Older iOS versions and macOS use different labels, including Manage Plan or Downgrade Options. Follow the route on Apple’s current support page for your actual device rather than copying screenshots from a different version. On a Windows PC, iCloud for Windows also offers a storage-plan change menu.
Check storage before the paid period ends
Apple says a downgrade or cancellation takes effect after the current subscription billing period. If the account contains more data than the new allowance permits, iCloud may stop syncing new information and completing backups until you free space or buy more storage. Download or remove files thoughtfully before confirming the change, and check whether an Apple One bundle already supplies iCloud storage so you do not accidentally leave your account below its current use.
A cancellation does not promise a cash refund
Apple directs customers seeking a refund for a recent plan change to contact it, with partial refunds available where required by law. Its help page says to contact Apple within 14 days if you recently changed your plan and wish to request a refund; this is a request route, not a guarantee that every previous monthly charge will be reversed. Check your Apple Account’s subscription record for the renewal status after making the change.
A practical example
If an iCloud+ subscriber has 80 GB stored and chooses the free 5 GB plan, the new lower allowance will not support ordinary ongoing syncing of that content. They should review storage use before the paid period ends rather than assuming cancellation also creates spare cloud capacity.
