Auto Trader UK Advert Refunds: Cancelling a Private Car Listing

Paid to advertise your car on Auto Trader and then decided not to sell? The cost of a private listing is separate from a vehicle sale between a buyer and a seller. Auto Trader publishes an advertising-service policy, so a question about getting the listing fee back should not be confused with trying to return a car bought from a dealer on the platform.

What happens once a private advert is live

Auto Trader’s advert-refund help article explains that it does not generally refund private advertising fees merely because the owner changes their mind after the advert goes live. The listing service is treated differently from a physical product return. Check whether your payment bought a live advert, an upgrade or another service before assuming taking the car off the market will undo the advertising charge.

The listing itself can be managed separately

If you have already sold the car privately or decided to keep it, open the account used to place the advert and follow the available listing-management controls. Ending an advert’s visibility is not the same as reversing a previously delivered advertising service. Keep a copy of the original listing package and invoice, especially if a promotion or add-on was purchased. A private-seller listing cannot be treated as a trader subscription just because both appear under the Auto Trader name.

The terms identify different advertisers

The advertising terms distinguish private sellers from traders and address conditions for publishing adverts. A dealer using professional advertising products may have separate contractual terms. If you paid via a business account, identify the product before relying on an FAQ directed at private individuals. Likewise, an individual buyer’s complaint about a vehicle sold by a dealer is not a refund request for Auto Trader advertising.

When the advertised service was not provided

If the advert never appeared or the purchased feature was not supplied as confirmed, describe that service issue to Auto Trader support with your booking or transaction reference. This is a different fact pattern from changing your mind about a live advert, so explain what was promised and what appeared in the account. Retain a screenshot of any error and the original invoice. Do not assume the platform can refund the whole vehicle price where the sale was actually made by a separate dealer or individual.

A practical example

You pay to advertise a car, receive enquiries and then decide to pass the vehicle to a family member instead. Removing the listing avoids further enquiries but does not automatically create a refund entitlement for the earlier advertising service. Check your package details and Auto Trader’s published private-listing rule rather than using guidance for returning a car bought from cinch or another retailer.

Official help and checking your details

Use Auto Trader’s official help centre and your listing account for a private-advert issue. Supply the advert ID, purchase date, package and description of any feature that did not work. Keep vehicle-sale or finance disputes separate from questions about the cost of the online listing. This article does not advise on vehicle-sale legal claims or guarantee the outcome of an advertising complaint.
